Patofyziologické mechanismy vzniku FD zahrnují viscerální hypersenzitivitu, poruchy motility žaludku, infekční, imunologické nebo psychosociální faktory, přesto všechny nejsou dosud známy. Příznaky FD zhoršují kvalitu života a komplexní léčba je indikována, pokud jednoduchá opatření, jako je ujištění o nepřítomnosti organické příčiny a dietní terapie, selžou. Specifická terapie není u dětí známa a je do značné míry symptomatická. Navzdory chronické povaze FD neexistují u dospělých žádné důkazy, které by naznačovaly, že je spojena se sníženým přežitím (1, 38, 39).
