Hypertenze u dětí je poměrně vzácná. Na rozdíl od dospělých jde ve více jak 70 % případů o hypertenzi sekundární, především v časném dětském věku. Při zjištění závažného zvýšení tlaku u dítěte s negativní rodinnou anamnézou hypertenze musíme vždy myslet na hypertenzi sekundární.

Závažnost sekundární hypertenze spočívá v tom, že zvýšení tlaku je známkou jiného onemocnění. Správná a včasná diagnóza a léčba tohoto onemocnění může vést k úpravě zvýšeného krevního tlaku a tím zabránit rozvoji dalších komplikací.
