Boxing v současném provádění, kdy přes 90 % rozhodčími hodnocených úderů v ringu jde na hlavu, je z hlediska neurologa zcela nepřijatelný. Na základě studia literatury a osobních zkušeností nelze ani souhlasit se zařazením boxingu mezi sporty. Sport - amatérský i vrcholový - autor chápe jako činnost, která má rozvíjet a udržovat jak kondici tělesnou i duševní, tak eticko-morální vlastnosti člověka. Činnost, při které hlavním záměrem je protivníka přemoci úderem do hlavy, což při opakování vede k ireverzibilním změnám v CNS, je činností lidskému zdraví škodlivou. Kromě rizika úmrtí v ringu je daleko závažnější vznik syndromu posttraumatické encefalopatie, tzv. punch-drunk syndromu či encephalopathia pugilistika. Dostavuje se i několik let po boxerově kariéře u 9-17 % dlouhodobě boxujících. Odpovídá postižení extrapyramidového systému s hypomimií, celkovou zpomaleností, flekční rigiditou, parkinsonským tremorem a mentální deteriorací. Příčinou jsou amyloidová depozita v CNS, identická se změnami při Alzheimerově demenci.
