Diabetes mellitus l. typu (DM l. typu) patří mezi častá a závažná chronická onemocnění. V současné době je jeho incidence (počet nových případů na 100 000 osob ročně) do 14 let věku v České republice 12/100 000 a při dosavadním trendu nárůstu nových případů lze očekávat, že se v roce 2005 zvýší na 15/100 000. Závažným faktem je skutečnost, že 7 % dětí při manifestaci nemoci je ve věku do 4 let. Nemoc se vyskytuje u obou pohlaví, pouze v nejnižší věkové skupině je častější u chlapců. Čím dříve choroba vznikne, tím déle trvá a riziko pozdních komplikací je větší. Současně i léčba nejmladších dětí je nejnáročnější.
