ORAL REHYDRATION OF INFANTS AND TODDLERS - POSSIBILITIES AND LIMITATION

Acute diarrhea in infants and toddlers are the most frequent causes of dehydration (D). Especially severe D increases the risk of mortality in these children. In the therapy for uncomplicated D (dehydration no more than 9 % of body weight loss) it is possible to use oral rehydration solutions (ORS). They are prepared easily, applied immediately, and the composition is also optimal for the body fluids of patients. ORS may be used in general practice but also during the treatment in hospital. This short statement was to show the basic principles of oral rehydration and to provoke our colleagues in primary as well as hospital care for use of ORS.
