Nejčastější klinicky manifestní formou primární infekce způsobené herpes simplex virem (HSV) - typ 1 (labialis) je tzv. primární herpetická gingivostomatitida. Onemocnění se vyskytuje zejména v dětském věku, postihuje však i dospělé jedince, u nichž může probíhat méně typicky. V současnosti je tato choroba nejčastější akutní stomatitidou.

Autoři ve svém sdělení popisují neobvyklou formu HSV primoinfekce vyvolanou sérotypem 2 (genitalis) se současným postižením sliznice dutiny ústní a genitálu.
