Chronic constipation - difficulty of treatment in childhood

Organic versus functional disease should be explained clearly. Treatment of chronic constipation is mainly based on empirical experience. Treatment is stressful and might be long lasting. Therapy for chronic constipation is complex and includes patient and parent education concerning changes of life style preacautions, relief of impaction, softening of the stool and prevention of suppression of defecation reflex.
