Allergic rhinitis (AR) belongs to the most frequent allergic disorders affecting 15 % of the czech children and adolescents. Allergy is a systemic disease with the local manifestations. Upper and lower airways are affected by a common inflammatory process. Allergic rhinitis is one of the risk factors for asthma development. The new classification of allergic rhinitis is based on the assessment of severity and duration of symptoms and quality of life parameters. AR is subdivided into intermitent and persistent. In the management of the persistent AR early antiinflammatory treatment is emphasized (intranasal corticosteroids, antileukotrienes, antihistamines of the II. generation; specific allergen immunotherapy). In patients with persistent AR should be evaluated spirometry.
