Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects people of all ages and its prevalence has increased over the past two decades in many parts of the world. Studies of the natural history of asthma have demonstrated that the majority of people with asthma begin demonstrating signs of disease within the first years of life. New guidelines emphasize as their main objective gaining controle of asthma. This approach means controlling symptoms, limitation of activities, sleep disturbance, lung function and the use of rescue medication. A new update of the GINA (Global Initiative on Asthma) guidelines was recently available and it is based on the control of the disease. A total control of the disease can be achieved in more than a third of patients, and good control can be achieved in a large proportion of them, when an appropriate treatment is given. Although any asthma guidelines may not be perfect, they appear to be the best vehicle available to assist primary care physicians and patients to receive the best possible care of asthma.
