Brain abscesses are life-threatening complications of purulent meningitis and they are rare in childhood. The treatment of brainabscesses demands a long-term application of antibiotics and often neurosurgical intervention. Despite complex care theprognosis of brain abscesses remains serious, there is a significant risk of relapse of disease and permanent sequelae includingpsychomotoric and neurological disorder or epilepsy. The case report decribes a five years-old boy with purulent meningitis whose condition despite of antibiotic treatment wascomplicated by developing a brain abscess that required neurosurgery. Streptococcus parasanguinis and Streptococcus intermediuswere proved as etiological agents. The total lenght of antibiotic treatment was 6 weeks. The patient recovered without anyconsequences, no reccurence of meningitis or abscess had occured.
