The half-forgotten presentation of whooping cough may, in the era of vaccination refusal, become a real threat for newborns and
susceptible infants. The incidence of pertussis is rising, also as a result of a more rapid waning of immunity post-vaccination and
adaptability of the Bordetella species. Early and thorough vaccination coverage in infants and pertussis revaccination in women
during pregnancy are the only real precautions. The paper compares a historical perspective of the disease with current knowledge.
