Evaluation of sleep in adolescents

Mgr. Jana Chromá, Ph.D.
Ústav ošetřovatelství a porodní asistence, Lékařská fakulta, Ostravská univerzita, Ostrava

Sleep is very important for the normal development and daily functioning of an adolescent.

Objective: The aim of this article is to describe, analyse and compare the assessment tools used to evaluating sleep in adolescents.

Methods: Design: Review - literature review. Electronic databases (Bibliographia Medica Čechoslovaca, MEDLINE, Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus) were used to obtain data. Measuring tools evaluating sleep in languages other than Czech, Slovak or English and scales inappropriate for measuring sleep in adolescents were excluded from the analysis.

Results: There are many studies in the professional public on the issue of sleep assessment in children and adolescents. Testing of psychometric properties, translation into other languages and other modifications continue to occur on the scales we seek. It would be useful to create a uniform, systematic, screening tool for assessing sleep in children and adolescents Conclusion: Sleep problems can result in behavioural problems, depressive behaviours, a deterioration in the relationship between child and parent, hyperactivity, impairment of school grades, anxiety in adulthood etc. Therefore, it is essential to properly assess sleep as early as in childhood or adolescence, e.g. in a general practitioner's office for children and adolescence through the most commonly used scale of Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ).

Keywords: evaluation, measuring tools, sleep, adolescent.
