Role oligosacharidů mateřského mléka ve vývoji dítěte

Oligosacharidy mateřského mléka známe nejčastěji pod zkratkou HMO – z anglického human milk oligosaccharides. HMO jsou třetí největší složkou mateřského mléka a jejich základem je disacharid laktóza. Mezi další sacharidy, které společně s ní vytváří HMO, patří N-acetylglukosamin, galaktóza, kyselina sialová, glukóza a fukóza. Z biochemického hlediska je můžeme dělit na neutrální (a ty dále na neutrální a neutrální s N-koncem) a kyselé, což má vliv na jejich vlastnosti. V současné době je identifikováno asi přes 200 různých HMO, ale některé se v mateřském mléce nachází pouze ve velmi nízkých koncentracích.
