Vaccination against varicella

Up to 100 000 people can be affected by chickenpox in the Czech Republic each year. The development of vaccination against this disease began more than 30 years ago and routine VZV immunization has been under way in the USA for more than 10 years. Live attenuated ­vaccine against chickenpox is effective and safe. It can be applied in 1-dose regimen since 12 months of age, in 2-dose regimen since 13 years of age. It is contraindicated with systemic hypersensitivity to any compound of the vaccine, in pregnancy, with serious cellular immune deficiencies and with chronic aspirin therapy. Immunization with MMR-VZV tetravaccine can be expected in future.

Chronic idiopathic musculoskeletal pain syndromes (CPS) are characterised by persistent, longterm musculoskeletal pain without an identifiable morphological cause. They are not uncommon during childhood. Most frequently they affect older school children and adolescents and may cause significant physical as well as psychosocial disability. Acute inflammation of the middle ear

cute inflammation of the middle ear (otitis media acuta – OMA) is one of the most frequent diseases in childhood. It is an inflammation of mucosa of Eustachian tube, middle ear cavity and other parts of pneumatic system of a temporal bone. Factors taking part in the cause of the acute otitis media are: 1. dysfunction of Eustachian tube 2. penetrating infection 3. insufficient immune defence. Acute otitis media can be divided clinically in 4 phases: phase of tubular occlusion, exudation, suppuration, and reparation. The most frequent etiological agents are respiratory viruses, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophillus pneumoniae and Moraxella catarhalis.

Chronic abdominal pain in children are one of the most common symptoms investigated in gastroenterology service. Etiology of that complaints are different and also different in a specific children´s age. The inflammation bowel disease and malabsorption syndrome includes all states in which there appear disorders in the digestion and absorption of basic nutrients and consequently disease due to a deficienty of those substance.

72 692 diarrheal diseases were reported in the year 2005 in the Czech Republic (EPIDAT). The occurence is very frequent in children, children between 1–4 years are the most affected group. Salmonellas and campylobacters are the most frequent microbial etiological agents, but in children viral gastroenteritis caused especially by rotavirus occurs frequently. Clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment of the most common diarrheal diseases are described in the article.
