Scoliotic deformity that progresses in child age is a serious spinal condition that affects in a complex manner not only the locomotor system of the child but also, secondarily, his organ systems, particularly the cardiopulmonary system. A number of medical disciplines are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of this deformity. The role of paediatricians in diagnosis, surveillance and conservative treatment of scolioses is essential. The aim of the paper is to summarize the definition, classification and examination methods for scolioses as well as to summarize modern therapeutic procedures.

At present, the possibility of prevention of pneumococcal disease is expanding. There are available 7 -, 10 – and 13-valent conjugate vaccines (PCV-7, PCV-10, PCV-13). PCV-13 (Prevenar 13) was registered as the newest in 2009. This vaccine contains a protein carrier identical as the previous vaccine PCV-7 (Prevenar) and plus six new serotypes (ST) Streptococcus pneumoniae: 1, 3, 5, 6A, 7F and 19A. Cephalhaematoma is defined as subperiostal blood collection occurring in newborns secondary to birth trauma of a head. The group of 254 children suffered from cephalhaematoma were treated at Clinic of Pediatric Surgery, Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Brno Faculty Hospital within 7 years. 235 patients were treated by aspirations and 19 patients underwent neurosurgery, it means that all patients were treated with determined surgical intervention. The authors describe a 16-year-old boy with a ten-week history of spinal pain who was admitted to hospital for severe blockade of the thoracolumbar junction and marked paravertebral spasm accompanied by fever. An MRI scan of the thoracolumbar spine revealed spondylitis at the level of the L1 and L2 vertebrae. Microbiological examination (haemoculture) confirmed Staphylococcus aureus as the cause of the infection; it was well sensitive to selected the long-term antibiotic treatment.
