Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a group of disorders triggered by endothelial injury or dysfunction. TMA is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and ischemic organ injury due to thrombosis in microvasculature. The most often damaged organs are kidneys. TMA is observed as primary or most frequently secondary, acquired form – especially linked to shiga-toxin producing E. coli infection. Understanding of epidemiology, pathophysiology, laboratory and clinical signs and differential diagnosis is crucial for early and on-time specific diagnostic approach of this life-threatening diseases.
