Smoking is not an adult decision, as presented by the tobacco industry marketing, but a childhood illness - most smokers light up for the first time before their 18th birthday, adults start smoking exceptionally. Therefore, there is an interest in smoking in the pediatrician's or adolescent's health facility. This includes also the use of other tobacco products than cigarettes, or other forms of nicotine, and the explanation that "less harmful" does not mean "harmless". Except of the risk level, attention paid to addiction is also appropriate.

Tick-borne encephalitis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. The course of the disease is variable in patients, from a mild course to a severe form associated with meningitis, meningoencephalitis etc. The severity of the disease increases with age. In pediatric population, infections with a subclinical or milder course are more common compared to adults. Long-term health consequences are relatively rare. However, diagnosis is complicated by the fact that tick-borne encephalitis may mimic common diseases in children. The causative agent of the tick-borne encephalitis is a virus from the Flaviviridae family, Ixodes ricinus...

Although causing mostly asymptomatic infections, human papillomaviruses (HPV) can also be responsible for a number of benign diseases with high morbidity and other premalignant diseases and carcinomas in both women and men. The population comes into contact with HPV soon after sexual debut, and persistent infection can have late sequelae. Highly effective HPV vaccines are available as a primary prevention tool against HPV types responsible for 90 % of benign lesions and cancers. A number of studies have shown these vaccines to be effective in reducing HPV-associated diseases not only in the vaccinated individuals but also in other age-matched individuals...

The second part of the review study is addressed to general practitioners for children and adolescents. In its empirical part, it relies on international resources from 2014-2020. In the first section, the study is dedicated to detecting childhood pain, whether it takes the form of simple screening or a more comprehensive pain assessment. It describes the most common tools, used to measure pain intensity in preschool and school children. Backed by literature, he seeks an answer to the question of why pediatric practice is often confined to a single indicator of pain - its intensity. In the second section, the study summarizes new insightinto...

Coarctation of the aorta is a significant congenital heart defect with a risk of developing symptomatology at any age. Its early diagnosis is crucial for good prognosis and progression of disease. In this case report, we present a six-month-old infant who, for two weeks, showed signs of somnolence with progressive swelling of the soft tissue located primarily on the lower limbs. Despite these obvious signs of heart failure, the cause was not detected early and the patient eventually died while still at home.

It is difficult to recognize masturbation manifestations in infants. There is no direct manipulation with genitals. Typical manifestations are crossed lower limbs, rhythmic movements in the pelvis, redness, sweating and specific sounds. This often frightens parents and doctors, and often a child is hospitalized with suspected epileptic seizures, paroxysmal dyskinesia or abdominal pain. Based on these diagnoses, the child is invasively examined. In the best case, the child is released with diagnosis of infant stereotypies with self-stimulating tendencies (infantile masturbation. But what if the stereotype is so fierce that the infant spends most of...

Neonatal suppurative parotitis (NSP) is a very rare disease. The presence of the classic triad of symptoms is necessary for diagnosis: swelling of the parotid gland; drainage of pus from the Stensen canal and identification of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) as the most common cause of inflammation. We present a 30-day-old mature newborn with a right-sided NSP. At the initial examination, significant bacteriuria was detected in his urine and SA was cultured from the middle stream of urine. After five days, parenteral combination antibiotic treatment with amoxicillin and clavulanic acid was switched to oral form and terminated on the tenth day of...
