The author draws attention to the increasing number of children hospitalized for acute alcohol intoxication and the increasing proportion of intoxicated girls. There has been an increase both in intentional alcohol use as a way of solving problems, particularly in adolescents with mental and social issues, and the inability to tackle these situations in the family. Case reports are used to highlight the problems associated with the management of intoxicated adolescents with aggressive behaviour who present a burden and risk for the operation of a paediatric department, with care of these conditions not being addressed adequately by legislation.

The half-forgotten presentation of whooping cough may, in the era of vaccination refusal, become a real threat for newborns andsusceptible infants. The incidence of pertussis is rising, also as a result of a more rapid waning of immunity post-vaccination andadaptability of the Bordetella species. Early and thorough vaccination coverage in infants and pertussis revaccination in womenduring pregnancy are the only real precautions. The paper compares a historical perspective of the disease with current knowledge.

Almost all patients with cleft palate suffer from Eustachian tube insufficiency. The result is usually the development of otitis media with effusion. Its first manifestation can be observed in newborns. Over ten years, we have performed primary suture of the lip in more than 300 newborns. Most surgical procedures were performer by day 7. Audiologic diagnosttics was indicated before the procedure. Using high frequency tympanometry, we were able to predict with high probability the presence of fluid in the middle ear. Middle ear secretion was detected in newborns, but only in those who had cleft palate. In all patients with isolated cleft lip, the middle...

About 1000–2000 children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are born in the Czech Republic every year. Early diagnostics is a critical factor in initiating an early intensive intervention, which has a significant positive impact on the child‘s prognosis as well as the quality of life of the child and its family. At the end of 2016, Decree no. 70/2012 Coll., On Preventive Examinations, was amended. The general preventive examination at 18 months of age now includes an examination for early signs of ASD. Vitamin C is one of the essential nutritional elements and is an irreplaceable substance for man, playing a crucial role at all stages of life. Due to its effect on the genome and because of its epigenetic role, vitamin C influences the development as well as health status at all stages of prenatal and postnatal development. It has a major impact on various functions of the immune system. It is a cofactor in a number of enzymes catalysing important reactions in the biosynthesis of indispensable substances (e.g. neurotransmitters, carnitine, collagen). It is one of the most significant antioxidants protecting tissues from oxidative stress, thereby having...

The first manifestation of atopy in early childhood is atopic dermatitis. Later, food allergies, allergic rhinitis and asthma may follow as part of the so-called atopic march. The impaired skin barrier function in the development of atopic dermatitis is the most important. Here, the decisive function of the topmost layer of the epidermis stratum corneum is crucial. In the care of atopic skin, it is necessary to identify factors that further worsen the condition of the skin barrier, eliminate them or at least minimize them. Cleansing the atopic skin requires the use of mild detergents and the subsequent hydration of the skin with an appropriate emoliant...

In the following case report we present the case of a 4-month old boy, who was transferred to our department from a smaller regional hospital and presented with a 3-day lasting fever and upper respiratory catarrh. His clinical examination was insignificant however, he was diagnosed with a dorsal dermal sinus and tethered cord syndrome at birth, making him a high-risk patient. The initial MRI showed merely a band of fibrous tissue reaching from the spinal canal to the dermal surface. However, not even an MRI scan reveals everything, as was shown later. Our patient developed multiple abscesses from cervical to sacral spine, which resulted in severe paraparesis...

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus is a rare disease characterized by impaired renal concentration ability. In addition to typical polyuria and polydipsia, a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms (anorexia, failure to thrive, vomiting and constipation) may be present in the clinical picture, which may predominate in the youngest age groups. Analysis of dietary habits and diet composition will help to direct the differential-diagnostic procedure, initiate adequate treatment and prevent possible fatal outcomes of the disease under stress conditions. The authors present case reports of two boys (8- and 15-month old) with predominant gastrointestinal symptomatology...

Therefore, when administering medicines to children, it is imperative to adhere to the rules of compliance with the drug applicationspecification as well as the developmental level of the child. This also applies to parents who need to be aware of fact thatthey are responsible for the health of their children. Antibiotics interfere with the child’s natural immunity, cause resistance andside effects. In the present paper, we try to point out the drug adherence of children, describe the principles of drug delivery inchildren, and evaluate exploratory findings in parents.

Acute mastoiditis (AM) is a very rare but serious complication of acute otitis media (AOM) in young infants. Subperiosteal abscess is the most common complication of AM, and when occurring as the sole complication was successfully managed with antibiotics and surgical intervention. High-resolution CT scans of the temporal bone was performed; findings were normal except for the right coalescent mastoiditis, osteolytic lesions...
