Covid-19 pandemic has affected the lives of most children and adolescents around the world. School closure was one of the anti-epidemic measures and schools in the Czech Republic was closed for the longest time of all EU countries. Most outschool acitivities was forbiden too. Travel between districts was restricted for some time. The parents of the children often stayed to work at home. This was reasons for social isolation of children and adolesncents. A number of clinical studies have already been published, which have confirmed the deterioration of the mental health in children and adolescents. The aim of the article is not only to point out the...

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory illnesses affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The incidence and prevalence of paediatric IBD is on the rise. IBD is classified into Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative colitis (UC). Special subunits consist of IBD affecting children younger than 6 years of age (VEO-IBD) and undifferentiated affection of the colon (IBD-U). IBD aetiology is multifactorial and still not fully understood. Genetic predisposition, alterations of gut microbiota, diet and environmental factors play a role in its development. Clinical manifestations of CD depend on disease location, and they usually consist of abdominal...

This article contains a simple guideline for primary health care, namely when to assess respiratory problems to be chronic, that typically present with a chronic cough, and how to manage them. Using past medical history data, current symptoms, chest X-rays and spirometry, we are able to identify children with a possible underlying disease (a specific cough), unlike the essentially insignificant postinfectious cough (a non-specific cough). This helps us know when to refer a child to a specialist for further examination. This diagnostic and therapeutical approach follows the latest CHEST recommendations (American College of Chest Physicians). A case...

Even at a time of progress in medicine, invasive meningococcal disease is among the most serious infectious diseases with high case fatality rates and a high proportion of severe lifelong consequences in the survivors. Vaccination is the best method of preventing this disease. In the Czech Republic, age-specific morbidity of invasive meningococcal disease in infants under one year of age has long been at high levels, with the second and third risk groups being adolescents aged 15 to 19 years and children aged 1 to 4 years, respectively. For vaccination against invasive meningococcal disease, two tetravalent conjugate vaccines containing antigens of...

Arterial hypertension (AH) belongs to main risk factors of cardiovascular diseases which have a high mortality rate in adult population. Due to the low prevalence of AH in children, pharmacological therapy of hypertension does not belong to the routine practice of pediatricians. Moreover, in children younger than 6 years, the etiology of high blood pressure (BP) is dominated by secondary hypertension whose treatment is reserved for specialized centres. The review article is focused on the long-term pharmacotherapy of primary hypertension in children older than 6 years. The aim is to provide a basic orientation to current pharmacotherapy recommendations...

Millions of paediatric patients per year, are undergoing the operations, all over the world. The most of these patients suffer from the preoperative anxiety, which intensity corelates with the development of maladaptive behavioral changes after the anesthesia. The influence of anesthetics to developing brain were omitted for a long time. But it has been shown that the general anaesthesia should influence cognitive functions for longer period. Even that it should have an impact to development on immature brain cognitive functions and should cause their deterioration at the adults.

Differential diagnosis of vomiting is quite extensive. Several factor need to be taken into account when looking for etiology, such as the age of the child, duration of vomiting and others. Many complementary examinations are often used to determine the diagnosis apart from taking medical history and doing physical examination. The results of examinations usually allow us to identify the etiology, but sometimes may lead us in the wrong direction. In this case report we present a boy with chronic vomiting who was admitted to pediatric neurology department. However, the etiology felt within the competence of a completely different specialization.

In most cases, caring for a child with a physical, mental or combined disability requires full-time care. Parents are those who perform a significant part of this care. These parents may be more at risk of burden and stress in caring for their children compared to parents of children without disabilities. The article aims to present information on the level of stress in parents of disabled children in comparison with the group of parents who have children without disabilities. A standardized research tool Parenting stress index 4 - short form (PSI SF) was used to evaluate the degree of stress. Results obtained from 200 parents (100 parents of children...

The infant and toddler period is associated with the adaptation of the child to the "new" world and the gradual maturation of the digestive tract. This immaturity can manifest itself not only in a number of functional digestive problems, such as infantile colic, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating and vomitting, but also in lactose intolerance or, due to the maturation of the immune system, allergies to cow's milk proteins. Breast milk is the gold standard in infant nutrition. Special infant milks are intended for non-breastfed infants who experience these problems.
