Fibrous dysplasia is a benign bone disease occuring in mono- or polyostotic form that affects predominantly long bones of thelimbs and cranium. Its etiology is associated with gene mutation on the 20th chromosome leading to the failure of bone formationand remodeling. Most lesions are asymptomatic, the rest is manifested by pain, the development of deformity or pathologicalfracture. Medication treatment can help reduce pain, surgical therapy involving biopsy is indicated for the eradication of symptomaticlesions, fracture repair and deformity.

Identification of impaired child’s development symptoms through screening and diagnostics of autism spectrum disorders movesto at ever younger ages. Pediatricians become key actors for the early identification of autistic symptoms, for arranging a diagnosticprocess, and for focusing on educational and pedagogical interventions at the earliest possible age of the child. Providinghigh-quality evidence-based information on autistic spectrum disorders to a broad medical community, especially pediatricians,is the current task of experts in diagnostics and working with people with autistic spectrum disorders. This paper is a contributionto improving...

Asthma is a relatively frequent disease in both the paediatric and adult population. Its prevalence has been constantly increasingdue to harmful chemicals in the environment and biological allergens. Many children and adolescents would like to engage insports, but cannot do so for asthmatic troubles. The question of how to combine sports activity and asthmatic disease could bepartially answered based on the knowledge of the relationship between physical exercise and this condition.

Therapy of paediatric rheumatic diseases has radically changed over the past twenty years with introduction of biologic drugs. Thesenew drugs represent a significant advance in targeted and effective treatment especially for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. However, biologics are used off-label in other serious systemic inflammatory diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, systemic vasculitis, and autoinflammatory diseases. With the modern treatment, most our patients reachremission and they are thus able to lead a normal life without any limitation. According to the mechanism of action, we can dividebiologic...

Most supplements used by children are not under the recommendation of a health care provider. The most common reasons foruse of supplements in children are for health promotion, yet little scientific data support this notion in nutrient-replete children.Pediatricians may recommend a daily supplement for the following groups of children: a) children who do not eat a regular, balanceddiet that includes foods from a variety of food groups, b) children with a poor appetite, c) children who have a restrictivediet, such as a vegetarian or dairy free diet, d) children with chronic medical conditions and e) children who are underweight.Neverthless it is important...

In this case study, the authors investigate the condition of a 15,5 year old patient with insulinoma presenting with predominantly neurologicalsymptoms (numbnes in upper limba, lips, and tongue, psychomotor retardation) triggered by recurrent severe hypoglycemia. The initial abdominal ultrasound did not verify any tumorous mass. Subsequent imaging examinations (abdominal ultrasound, endoscopicultrasound, CT, MRI, PET/CT scans, scintigraphy) yielded significantly discrepant results. Only the use of contrast-enhancedendoscopic ultrasonograhy and elastometry identified a small lesion at the junction of the head and the body of the pancreas,non-homogenous...

The article presents an adapted clinical practice guideline (CPG) in inserting and taking care of the peripheral venous access inneonates and infants. It was developed in a similar way (using the ADAPTE protocol) as the clinical practice guideline in neonatalskin care (published in Pediatrie pro praxi No. 4/2015), in gastric tube insertion and verification (No. 1/2016) and in suctioning ofneonates and infants (No. 4/2017).On the basis of a literature search the existing clinical practice guidelines and other recommendations were identified and analyzedmethodologically and then a draft of a new, adapted clinical practice guideline was developed. It...

Although limb swelling is a well-known complication of vaccination, its rarity and wide band of differential diagnosis of limb swellingmake it a diagnostic challenge. In this case report, we describe a case report of postvaccination intramuscular pyogenic abscessformation in a 7-month-old infant with thingh swelling and their ultrasonography findings and magnetic resonance imaging. Bothpediatricians and radiologists should be familiar with this rare entity, its clinical and imaging spectrum, and follow-up strategies.

Hippocrates was a brilliant scientist and practitioner, physician and philosopher in his day. In the principles of his Oath, he establishedthe main source of ethical professional strength for physicians for centuries ahead. The aim of the article is to present theethical contextual framework of Hippocratic teaching, with an emphasis on the case study as a teaching method. The Hippocraticcasuistic approach advised to respect the unique and detailed nature of each case, particularly in situations when the patient, due to his condition or age, could not contribute to treatment with his interpretation of the situation.
