The current situation has posed new challenges. Children traumatized by the war enter the outpatient clinics. How to deal with this new situation? How best to handle it? How to help children understand their manifestations? In this article, we have tried to find at least partial answers in a brief and concise overview and to give basic instructions on how to proceed.

Although we all wish to deal with serious conditions in paediatrics as little as possible, we must be well prepared for them. The most important aspect is to recognize a seriously ill child early, which can sometimes be difficult considering a crowded waiting room of a general paediatrician. Then urgent intervention is, of course, necessary, including the administration of proper medication and, finally, mediation of transport to a suitable department. The presented article deals with the recognition of a seriously ill child and the basic management of the most common emergencies in primary paediatric care.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common chronic oral mucosal lesion affecting up to 25% of population. The diagnosis is based on well-defined clinical characteristics but the precise aetiology and pathogenesis remains unclear. The treatment of RAS should be based on identification and control of possible predisposing factors. A wide range of topical medicaments is available as antiseptics, anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids. The systemic treatment is indicated in patients with continuous and aggressive manifestation, what is extremely rare in children. The present article provides a review of the current concept and knowledge...

The soft tissue cystic lesions are often present in the oral cavity of neonates and sucklings and can create diagnostic hesitations and apprehension and anxiety among parents. The soft tissue cystic lesions are often misdiagnosed or left untreated due to lack of experience and knowledge of neonatologists, paediatricians and dentists that are focused to pathological lesions on oral cavity of neonates and sucklings. The majority of oral cystic lesions is asymptomatic and commonly resolve without any interventions. However, precise clinical examination of oral cavity and knowledge of clinical symptoms of these lesions are essential for early and exact...

Chickenpox, also known as varicella is an infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus. The infection most often occurs in childhood, without complications and ends by spontaneous recovery. However, serious and life-threatening complications can occur, especially in immunosuppressed individuals. Even if the infection is mild, this neurotropic virus remains in the nerve ganglia and may reactivate in the form of herpes zoster later. Even this clinical manifestation can be accompanied by very unpleasant complications. There is an effective vaccine against chickenpox, which is part of national immunization plans in many countries, but is not...

Arterial hypertension is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular and renal disease in both adults and children. In adults, the prevalence of hypertension has almost doubled worldwide in the last 30 years, reaching more than 1.2 billion people. In children, a global meta-analysis of trends in hypertension prevalence has shown that blood pressure has increased worldwide in the last 20 years, from 1% in the 1990s to as much as 6% in the last decade. In children, unlike adults, no epidemiological data on trends in hypertension prevalence are available in the Czech Republic. The only Czech study published in 2007 reported hypertension prevalence...

Sleep is very important for the normal development and daily functioning of an adolescent. Objective: The aim of this article is to describe, analyse and compare the assessment tools used to evaluating sleep in adolescents. Methods: Design: Review - literature review. Electronic databases (Bibliographia Medica Čechoslovaca, MEDLINE, Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus) were used to obtain data. Measuring tools evaluating sleep in languages other than Czech, Slovak or English and scales inappropriate for measuring sleep in adolescents were excluded from the analysis. Results: There are many studies in the professional public on the issue of sleep assessment...

The term myocardial hypertophy encompasses a wide range of pathologies. Most diseases in this group are serious, affecting the child's hemodynamics and clinical condition. However, there are also idiopathic or transient hypertrophies with good prognosis. This case report presents a transient myocardial hypertrophy in a newborn, probably caused by the premature arterial duct closure arising due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by the mother in the third trimester of cryptic pregnancy. The authors present an approach to the differential diagnosis of the myocardial hypertrophy in neonates and infants.

Food is an irreplaceable source of essential nutrients for humans. Regular and proper eating is one of the conditions for a child's proper physical, mental and social development. If a child does not receive enough energy and nutrients in the long term, this can lead to the development of somatic and psychological disorders in the beginning, which tend to become severe diseases or direct threats to life over time and according to the individual's resilience. Anorexia nervosa, which is one of the eating disorders, is a completely typical disease leading to these consequences. The incidence in boys is less common than in girls, which can make recognising...

Interdisciplinary cooperation especially between a paediatrician and a pedicurist in treating unguis incarnatus prevents protracted and repetitive relapses. A conservative and painless way is to use different types of nail support, tamponade and taping the lateral nail fold. Surgical solutions such as a lateral nail fold surgery, a nail plate partial resection or a total ablation are not desirable. Early diagnosis and professional treatment with a nail support interventions prevents nail bed damage and deformities of the finger joint after frequent surgeries. A conservative approach to treatment allows for an immediate return to normal life.

The paper deals with the results of the investigation of neonatal skin injury prevalence and methods of their nursing and treatment, which was conducted in 2020 in the perinatology centers of the Czech Republic and also at two additional neonatology departments. The results are compared according to the type of department, birth weight and gestational week of the observed newborns. The results of the survey showed that the highest number of skin injuries was caused by infiltration and extravasation, then by use of irritant cleansers and by insensitive removal of adhesives or electrodes. Skin integrity impairment connected with increased moisture took...

The article deals mainly with the conservative approach and practical education of parents by the nurse in eye care of newborns and infants with epiphora and congenital tear duct obstruction. Lacrimal sac massage is a widely used non-invasive treatment modality and a high level of parental compliance is a prerequisite for its effectiveness. Part of the text is devoted to a brief description of the invasive method of tear duct probing and lacrimal lavage.

Congenital hemangiomas (CH) are rare fully developed hemangiomas that are present at birth. Rapidly involving congenital hemangiomas (RICH) are a more common variant that generally has a very good prognosis. The authors describe a case of a newborn baby boy with a left cervical vascular lesion measuring 26 × 19 × 14 mm. Repeated ultrasound examination revealed a hypoechogenic lesion with reduced vascularization and with rapid spontaneous involution over several months. After considering all the findings, a definitive diagnosis of rapidly involving congenital hemangioma was suspected.

Calprotectin is found in bodily fluids at concentrations proportional to the degree of inflammation, in feces at levels roughly 6× higher than in the blood. Fecal calprotectin reflects intestinal inflammation.
